I am a custom portrait photographer, working on-location or in my Sammamish home studio. The studio is available for maternity, newborns and babies up to one-year old. Having fun and keeping the session casual will ensure we get genuine natural smiles, giggles and emotion.
Once we’ve confirmed your appointment, I’ll visit with you about location and clothing ideas. We can do this in person, over the phone or through email to ensure your questions are answered and the session is tailored to your portrait goals.
Newborn sessions are my passion! The birth of a new life is wondrous and it is a privilege to be entrusted to capture these first heirloom images of your child. When newborns and their parents come into my home studio, I want them to feel relaxed and at ease, safe and secure in sharing this brand new life with me. In our newborn session, I do not work under any time constraints as every baby is unique and treated that way. We will take as much time as needed to feed, change, settle and sooth, so both parents and baby are relaxed and comfortable.
“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever…it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten them.” — Aaron Siskind
Although we will take as much time as needed, generally sessions are 3 hours. Newborn sessions are done within the first 2 weeks of life, with days 5-10 being my favorite/preferred. During this time, the babies are still sleepy, pose and curl up easily, their skin looks great and they don’t mind being moved into different positions. Certain poses work best in those days, but beautiful images are possible at any age.
Do you have props?
Um, YES!! My entire studio is FULL of beautiful props and handmade items that I will use to style your newborn session. Plan for some images to simply be a classic background fabric where the attention is only on your newborn and others to be more artistically styled with props such as newborn beds, bowls, buckets and more.
After we’ve confirmed your appointment, I will send you my Newborn Session Prep Guide that explains what to expect before, during and after our session.
It’s never too early to book your newborn session, and the earlier in your pregnancy the better to secure availability on the calendar. Your due date can be a moving target as (you will soon discover) babies keep their own time schedule and it rarely matches with ours! As such, I normally hear from parents while they are still in the hospital or right after the birth and we will schedule the session at that time.
“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” – Karl Lagerfeld
Baby sessions (up to one year old) are different from newborn sessions as there is no “best window” for these pictures. These sessions are distinguished by showcasing the different stages of first year acheivements:
- Smiling (0-2 months)
- Rolling over (3-4 months)
- Pushing up/tummy time (4-5 months)
- Sitting up (5-8 months)
- First toofers - yes, I spelled that correctly – as those cheesy grins showing off their new tooth are just too darn cute! (4-7 months)
- Crawling (7-10 months)
- Standing (8-12 months)
- Cake Smash - 1st Birthday
Babies reach these milestones at different times, so if we schedule a session in advance and your child isn’t quite there yet, just call me.
They’re only this little for a short while. You can’t stop time, but I can capture it for you.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! There is something especially beautiful about a woman carrying her precious child. I love to capture that glow, excitement, anticipation and tender connection between you. It’s such an amazing time of life for you. I would be honored to capture your pregnancy photos and show off your gorgeous new shape.
“No one else will ever know the strength of my love for you. After all, you’re the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside” – Author Unknown.
Everyone’s bump “pops” at different times, but maternity photos are usually best captured between weeks 32 to 36, though I've done sessions as early as 28 weeks and 4 days before the due date. Usually in that window your tummy is round and you’re still feeling great.
The majority of my maternity sessions are done outdoors taking advantage of the natural beauty where we live, but I do offer studio and milk bath session. I have many gowns that my moms-to-be are welcome to use for their session. Your pictures will be gorgeous and I'm here to help pose and prepare you to bring out your natural glow and beauty. Want an excuse to be pampered? Consider treating yourself to a manicure right before our session since many of your belly shots will also highlight your hands.
When I close my eyes and think of children and family photography, I see love, joy and happiness. When I see your family and children through my lens, I’m taking the pictures of your family that I would want for myself. My dad instilled a motto in myself, brother and sister of “Family First.” Growing up in a fabulous, loving family I look back on those pictures (some staged, some goofy) and emotionally I’m reconnected back to that time in my life.
“The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.” - Andy Warhol
With families and children you can expect both posed shots and candid shots. As a parent, we know children are silly, energetic, spontaneous and curious creatures. We all want that “one good” picture over the mantle of the beautifully posed family or child portrait….I promise, we’ll get it (as early as possible in the session). After that, we’ll let your kids be kids. Have fun, be silly – run, jump, play. After all, they ARE kids. In those moments I’ll capture your child’s true personality – those sweet expressions, natural smiles, genuine laughs, serious looks and dreamy gazes. After our traditional poses, you just might be surprised that the spontaneous moments when you forget I’m there, turns out to be your favorite “mantle worthy” picture.
Children/Family sessions are done on location at Golden Hour (2-2.5 before sunset) and usually last 1 to 1.5 hours. I suggest giving your child a snack just before you arrive and try to be a bit early to give them time to relax and warm up…or run out some “ants in the pants”. Bringing a favorite toy or stuffed animal is a great idea too. I am on a schedule and can't stop the sun from setting, so please be on time and arrive with your children dressed and ready so we get the most time for your session.
